Fundamentals of Vector shading/highlights? : graphic_design

Hello Illustrators! I have a question for you. The things with the arrows pointed at them, I have learned that these are vector shadows and highlights. For the longest time I never knew the actual term for them but I noticed that they added an extra element and some depth to flat images. I have been using illustrator for about full month now and I am slowly gaining an understanding of adding depth to flat design. My question is, what are the fundamentals or principles when it comes to vector shading and highlights?

**I took this photo from another related post on Stack Exchange, but the post didn’t go into full detail about the fundamentals
